Jochebed hides her baby where the soldiers will not look, in a basket among the bulrushes, and the river carries him to the one person in Egypt who can keep him safe.

Russell Punter tells it in a line or two a page and Barbara Bongini paints it in river greens and warm ochres, with dragonflies over the reeds and a fish or two in the shallows on almost every page for a toddler to find. The first spread is the goodbye, Jochebed kneeling in the reeds to push the basket out while Miriam says she will follow and see where he goes. The second is the rescue, the Pharaoh's daughter lifting him out among the water lilies and promising to keep him safe, with Miriam listening from the rushes. The third moves fast and happily, Miriam offering to fetch someone to care for him, the handover on the palace steps where he is given his name, and the two of them walking home in delight.

Twenty two square board pages, 145 mm on a side, thick enough for hands that are still learning to turn one page at a time. A QR code on the back cover opens an audio recording of the story, so it reads itself in the car.
