From Usborne, the British children's publisher that turned the board book into something to operate: press the buttons in its sound books to hear the scenes come alive, move a slider to change both the picture and the noise, lift a flap to see what is underneath.
Built for hands that are still learning to be gentle, which is exactly what makes them such dependable first-birthday and baby-shower gifts.

Ninety six pages of cheerful line drawings, each one built as a big open shape with a thick outline around it, for a child who cannot yet stay inside a fine line. Most openings work as a pair: one page sets something up and the facing page answers it, so a child who finishes the left side has a reason to turn to the right.
A monkey swings from a leafy vine under a printed line about it always being a good day up in the trees, and the facing page has a spotted leopard stretched out asleep along a branch with a trail of Zs and a butterfly drifting past. On another opening a bear balances on a surfboard at the top of a wave while a mermaid waves from under the water on the page opposite, the two printed captions running on from one page to the next. A frog leaps clear of a lily pad on one side, printed with a Boing, and a child comes down a snowy slope on a snowboard on the other. Everything is drawn as blank outline and nothing is pre colored, so every shape on the page is still waiting for a crayon.
Ninety six pages at about 8.5 by 9.8 inches, written by Alice James and illustrated by Emily Ritson. Large format, so two children can work on facing pages at the same table.
Paperback, 96 pages, 8.5 by 9.8 in (216 by 250 mm), from the Usborne My Big Coloring series. Usborne Publishing Ltd., April 2025. ISBN-13 9781835405642. Publisher age guidance: 3 and up.
The same series runs a seaside set of scenes in My Big Summer Coloring Book. For a smaller book that fits a bag, Little Coloring Things That Go uses the same bold outlines on vehicles, and First Magic Painting Love and Hugs needs only a wet brush to bring its pages up.
