Then the story chapter, the whole family piled under a patchwork quilt in an attic bedroom while the moon comes through the window, set to the Moonlight Sonata. Then lights out, the page washed in blues and greens, Mama rocking and knitting by a lamp while the wall clock whispers tick, tock, tick, and Brahms' Lullaby on the stave beside her. It closes outside the house looking in, mouselets asleep behind a lit window and the stars turning overhead, to Holst's Venus, the Bringer of Peace.

Eight pieces in all. Alongside those four the publisher lists Satie's Gymnopedies No. 1, Saint-Saens' The Swan, Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp and a Nocturne. Every one is printed as sheet music as well as played, which is the detail that makes this last beyond the year a child stops needing a bedtime routine read to them.
