Four hundred and forty-eight pages, which is roughly the size a gardening book has to be before it can answer the question you actually have in front of you. DK built this one with the experts at the RHS, the Royal Horticultural Society, and organized it the way you garden rather than the way a textbook is arranged: design the garden, build it, plant it, keep it alive, then fix what goes wrong.
The design chapter is a short course on its own, and it does not skip the hard landscaping most books hand-wave: step by step instructions for building a raised bed, creating a pond, and laying a patio or a lawn. Planting styles are given as recipes, groupings that work together, rather than as lists of plants you then have to combine yourself. Then the maintenance half, watering, feeding, pruning and propagating, each photographed step by step, plus a chapter on problem solving and on controlling weeds and pests.
The part you will keep coming back to is the Plant Chooser: galleries of hundreds of ornamental plants sorted so you can find the right plant for the right place at the right time of year, with the climate and season notes to back it. A DK hardcover published October 20, 2020, illustrated throughout.
