Lisa hangs her winter woolens on the line, the wind takes one red stocking, and Hedgie the hedgehog pushes his nose straight into it. It sticks. Every animal on the farm comes to laugh at him, so Hedgie tells them all it is a hat, and one by one the goose and the hen and the pig and the pony decide they want headgear of their own.
What makes it a Jan Brett is the second story running around the edges. While the farmyard argues in the middle of the page, Lisa is out in the borders getting ready for winter, and a child who has the words memorized will start hunting her instead. A companion to The Mitten, and set in the same snowy Scandinavian country.
This is the oversized lap edition: thick board pages at roughly 10.7 by 9.25 inches, wide enough to lie open across two laps and heavy enough that a toddler will need help holding it. That size is the point. Brett paints the fur, the thatch and the snow at a scale a small child can actually see, and the board pages survive being turned by someone who has not learned to be gentle yet.
Board book, 34 pages, about 10.7 by 9.25 in with a 0.83 in spine. Written and illustrated by Jan Brett. G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers, first oversized board book edition 2016. ISBN-13 9780399547386. Publisher age guidance: 1 to 3 years.
Hedgie turns up again in The Snowy Nap, the one where he refuses to sleep through the winter. Two more Jan Brett titles are on the shelf here as well: Jan Brett's Little Library, a four-book board set for the same age, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears, her oversized hardcover retelling with the same bordered pages.
