Eight picture tabs are cut into the edges of this board book, three along the top and five down the right, and a two year old works out what they do in about four seconds. Turn one tab and you land in the garden. Grab the tractor and you are on the farm. Grab the pail and shovel and you are at the shore, where you might spot a seagull, a starfish or a shell.
Each spread is a scene from the We're Going on a Bear Hunt animated film, paired on the facing page with a labelled panel of what you find there: sunflower, spider, beetle, ladybug, goat, chicken, egg, rooster, tractor, horse. The habitats run river, meadow, forest, farm, shore and sky, so the vocabulary a child collects is the vocabulary of actually going outside, not a random word list.
Eighteen thick board pages, a 7.19 inch near square trim built for small hands, and the soft watercolor look of the film rather than clip art. Publisher guidance is ages 2 to 5. It is the naming half of the series; My First 123 is the counting half.
