A sea otter pup narrates one day of his own life, and the facts turn out to be better than anything invented. He cannot open a shell with his paws or his teeth, so he balances a flat stone on his chest and pounds the shell against it until it gives. When he has finished eating he rolls over in the water to wash the scraps out of his fur. Then he is ready to dive again in a few hours.

Sydney Hanson floats him on his back in green kelp with sea urchins and a starfish drifting past, in the soft retro palette she uses across this series. The board is die cut into a shaped outline rather than a rectangle, which is what Cottage Door Press means by its Animal-Shaped Board Book series. Ten thick pages, 5.06 by 6.56 inches, which the publisher sizes for little hands and fingers to turn on their own.
