Mama Cat has lost her kitten on Halloween night, and every place she looks turns up somebody else. A bat in a hat. A newt in a boot. A pup all wrapped up in the mummy's bandages. The rhyme lands on the same beat every time, which is why a two year old starts saying it with you by the third spread, and why the last page still earns a laugh: where, oh, where can my Spooky be?
It is a hide and seek game as much as a story. Rachel Foo fills the spreads with candles, a bubbling cauldron, a lit jack o' lantern and a white mouse who turns up in every scene, so there is something to point at long after the words are known by heart. The board is die cut to a rounded cat shape rather than a rectangle, and the cover title is stamped in gold foil.
Written by Rosa Von Feder, illustrated by Rachel Foo, published by Cottage Door Press of Rolling Meadows, Illinois in 2020. Ten thick pages, 5.06 by 6.56 inches. The publisher pitches it as a candy alternative for a Halloween treat bag, and it is the one thing in that bag still around in November.
