A chipmunk has work to do. Walnuts, acorns and buckeyes all have to be underground before the cold arrives, and while she is busy the pumpkins swell, the apples and pears come ripe, and the forest floor disappears under fallen nuts. It is one small animal's to do list, told as an autumn walk.

What makes this series worth the shelf space is the surprise underneath. Every spread has a lift-a-flap, and some of those flaps open into a sturdy board pop-up rather than just another picture. A toddler learns very quickly that lifting might get them a flat page or might get them a whole scene standing up off the paper, and that uncertainty is what makes them come back to it.
