Most coloring books are a stack of outlines. Bloom is a designed object that happens to be a coloring book, which is why it survives on a coffee table between uses. The cover is hand illustrated and finished in iridescent foil, so the word BLOOM shifts color as you turn it under a lamp, and the whole thing is a generous 9 3/4 inches square.

Alli Koch draws flowers for a living. Peonies, anemones, roses, dahlias, ranunculus and eucalyptus, all in a confident single weight line with no shading to fight, which is exactly what makes them satisfying to fill in. More than thirty illustrations, printed on heavy paper.

Two things set it apart, and both are visible in the photographs. The first is that many of the drawings are printed white on solid black, so a bouquet already reads as finished before you have touched it, and a colored pencil laid over black behaves nothing like it does on white. The second is a pair of soft velvet pages the publisher includes to take a stray mark. Elsewhere a bouquet sits on a fine striped ground, and one page hides the words BE YOU inside the wreath.

Every page is perforated, so the one you are proud of comes out cleanly and goes into a frame instead of staying in the book.
