From Makerie Day, a one-artist studio in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where Christian illustrates and draws every bookmark, card and sticker in the line personally, after a graphic-design degree and a stretch as a school teacher.
Pretty and still practical is the whole brief, which is why one of these reads as a gift and still earns its keep in a book or on a desk. The studio's motto is “spread the sunshine”.

For the friend whose idea of a good birthday is being left alone with a book. She is cross legged in a wingback chair in striped pyjamas, hair up in a bow, holding the book high enough to hide everything but her eyes, and the book is lettered JANE AUSTEN, which is the whole compliment. A gilt bookcase stands beside her four shelves deep: coloured spines between white scroll bookends, a vase of pink flowers, two candles in brass holders, a blue and white teacup on a stack of books, a trailing plant in a terracotta pot. A scalloped pink clock hangs on the wall and she is plainly not looking at it. The banner across the top hopes you have a very bookish birthday, all of it drawn on a warm raspberry ground so the card does not read as a quiet one. Inside is blank for your own message. Christian McCreary illustrates every Makerie Day card herself and signs the back, and they are printed in the USA on textured hundred weight felt weave stock. A white envelope comes with it in a clear sleeve.
