The Father's Day present a child writes rather than picks off a shelf. Thirty two hardcover pages of prompts, checkboxes and blank frames, completed in the child's own handwriting, which is the whole point of it.

One spread hands over an award: here, let me give you this award, facing a fat gold trophy with WORLD'S printed above a blank and DAD below it, so the child decides what he is world's best at. Another wonders whether he can do anything at all and offers boxes to tick: ride a unicorn, build a bridge to the moon, invent a new kind of dance, plant a tree that grows ice cream cones, juggle one hundred water balloons. A third says I really look up to you, you know, when I grow up I hope I am as blank as you are, and gives a framed space on the facing page headed here's a picture of me all grown up. A cross section of a house and garden, ants hauling loads through the soil beneath it, carries I can tell you work hard to take care of our family and two lines to thank him for specific things. The last spread is a checklist of what the child has learned from him, you are always there for me, we'll have lots more adventures, I am loved, you help me be me, with a blank box to write your own, opposite a page of stars reading because of you, we are a family.

The artwork is cut paper collage in blue, green, yellow and orange. The cover is a yellow and green gingham with a debossed diamond panel and a shooting star, and the back reads: for my dad, because you're one of a kind. The pages take crayon, marker, pen or colored pencil, and most children finish the book in an afternoon.
