From Usborne, the British children's publisher that turned the board book into something to operate: press the buttons in its sound books to hear the scenes come alive, move a slider to change both the picture and the noise, lift a flap to see what is underneath.
Built for hands that are still learning to be gentle, which is exactly what makes them such dependable first-birthday and baby-shower gifts.

Every page gives a group of dinosaurs, a button, a tune, and exactly one move to copy. Twirl around like a Triceratops. Stomp your feet like a Stegosaurus. Flap your wings with the Pterodactyls. The instruction is one line long, which is the point: a child of ten months is not reading it, they are watching a grown up do it and joining in.
Then the last page puts the moves together and they do the whole dance at once while the dinosaurs stomp and roar. That structure is what makes it hold up to the fiftieth reading rather than the fifth, because by then the child is leading it.
Ana Martin Larranaga draws the dinosaurs soft, round and cheerful rather than toothy, in crayon textures on bright flat grounds, so nothing in it frightens a small child at bedtime. Thick board pages and a chunky square format built for hands that still grab rather than turn.
A board book with sound, 10 pages, 7.87 by 8.23 in, written by Sam Taplin from the Usborne Sound Books series. Usborne, August 2024. Publisher age guidance: 10 months and up.
