From Usborne, the British children's publisher that turned the board book into something to operate: press the buttons in its sound books to hear the scenes come alive, move a slider to change both the picture and the noise, lift a flap to see what is underneath.
Built for hands that are still learning to be gentle, which is exactly what makes them such dependable first-birthday and baby-shower gifts.

The mazes get harder as the book goes on, which is the whole reason a child stays with it. The first few are solved in a minute. By the back of the book a route has to be planned before the pencil moves, and the answers are printed there so nobody has to come and adjudicate.
Every maze sits inside a full page of prehistoric scenery, so the puzzle is never the only thing on the page. Finding fossils is a dig site crowded with palaeontologists, half unearthed skeletons and a red water cooler that Percy is trying to reach. Mangrove meal sends a Spinosaurus through salty channels and back to where it started without going anywhere twice. Midnight feast is a nocturnal tangle of white trails under a moon. Long distance flight runs a Pteranodon across a map of the whole Panthalassic Ocean.
Usborne publishes these to build problem solving and visual recognition, and that is a fair description of what is going on, though a five year old will simply say there are dinosaurs in it. A large format paperback, 64 pages, 11.97 by 9.80 in, written by Sam Smith with illustrations by various artists. Usborne, September 2023. Publisher age guidance: 5 years and up.
