From 4M, the Hong Kong toy maker whose KidzLabs science kits have been in museum shops and specialty toy stores in more than 80 countries since 1999.
Their rule is that the best way to learn science is to do science, so every kit is a real experiment a child runs at the kitchen table, not a demonstration to watch.

A tornado on the kitchen table, built by an eight year old with a screwdriver. The KidzLabs Tornado Maker fastens to the neck of a plastic bottle filled with water, and a small motor inside the grey base spins the whole column until a funnel opens at the surface and reaches all the way down. A pack of foam balls comes in the box, and in 4M's own photographs they hang inside the funnel and trace its shape, so the vortex can be watched rather than imagined.
The build is the other half of the toy. Base, base cover, bottle holder, battery cover, the motor with its water resistant ring, propeller, terminal caps and screws all arrive loose with an illustrated instruction sheet, and they go together with a cross head screwdriver. By the time the switch is flipped, the child watching the vortex already knows exactly what is turning underneath it.
Two 1.5V AA batteries and the screwdriver are not included. 4M prints FOR AGES OVER 8 on the carton.
