The presents under Spot's tree are wrapped, and a toddler can see exactly one thing about each of them: the shape. A present for Spot, what can it be? Lift the page and it is a bicycle. What did Steve get for Christmas? Lift the page and out comes a trumpet, which he is already blowing.

That guess and lift rhythm is the whole book, and it is perfectly matched to a one and two year old who has just worked out that things can be hidden. Ten thick board pages, big paper flaps sized for clumsy fingers, and a generous 8.37 inch square trim so the pictures stay bold rather than fiddly.

Eric Hill's Spot has been doing this since 1980, and the flat bright color, heavy black outline and gentle joke on every spread are why the original Where's Spot? became a classic. This is the newest of them, published October 2024. Publisher guidance is ages 1 to 3, and it is a cleaner Christmas Eve gift than anything with batteries.
