She is built on a hill in the country, and she is happy there. Then a road arrives. Then carriages, then trucks, then apartment blocks tall enough that she never sees the sun, and finally a city so bright she cannot find the stars. She is still standing, and nobody remembers she is there.

Virginia Lee Burton published this in 1942 and it won the Caldecott Medal the following year. It is a book about time, drawn as time: the same house from the same angle, page after page, while everything around her changes. Children read it as a story about a house that is sad and then happy. Adults read it as something else entirely, and that is why it has never been out of print.
