From Usborne, the British children's publisher that turned the board book into something to operate: press the buttons in its sound books to hear the scenes come alive, move a slider to change both the picture and the noise, lift a flap to see what is underneath.
Built for hands that are still learning to be gentle, which is exactly what makes them such dependable first-birthday and baby-shower gifts.

An Usborne Beginners reader about trees, built the way the series always is: short sentences, large type, and a full color photograph or painted illustration on every page, so a child reading on their own is never facing a wall of text.
Types of trees, on pages 10 and 11, sorts the world's trees into three groups with a small painting of each, a bushy broadleaf crown, tall straight evergreens and palms on bendy trunks, then sets a big sycamore leaf beside a spray of spiky evergreen needles so the difference is something you look at rather than something you are told. Hanging on, pages 18 and 19, is about the plants that live on other plants: moss in damp forest, mistletoe drinking from the branch it sits on, rainforest orchids taking water straight out of the air, a tall column of velvet foot mushrooms photographed climbing a trunk, and a boxed aside that jack-o-lantern mushrooms glow a spooky green at night. Tree houses, pages 20 and 21, moves in with the residents, a bald eagle at its eyrie, raccoons wedged into a tree hole, koalas asleep in a eucalyptus, and a squirrel family curled up together inside a hollow trunk.
Thirty two pages at about 6.1 by 8.3 inches, measured at Lexile 570L, written by Lisa Jane Gillespie and illustrated by Patrizia Donaera. The gentlest reading level of the Usborne Beginners readers we stock, which makes it a sensible first one.
