Usborne built this series for the moment a child stops being read to and starts reading. The sentences are short, the type is large, and every spread is laid out so a page of real information never looks like homework: one photograph big enough to fill half of it, numbered steps beside it, and a joke in a speech bubble at the foot.
Terrible twisters runs across pages 18 and 19 over a photograph of a tornado crossing a hay field, with four numbered panels that take a thundercloud through to a funnel touching the ground. The line beside the photograph tells a six year old that a tornado is like a giant vacuum cleaner, and the speech bubble at the bottom adds that twisters can sometimes suck fish and frogs out of ponds. Electric skies, on pages 12 and 13, gets through cumulonimbus clouds, forked lightning and why you always see the flash before you hear the thunder. Water on the move sets the entire water cycle out in five numbered steps across an illustrated coastline, and notes that the rain falling on you may have fallen on a dinosaur.
