Two thousand stickers is not a figure anyone rounds down. They come on sheet after sheet bound into the book, laid out in tight rows of tractors, pigs, cows, sheep, chickens, eggs, cats, pumpkins, hay bales, balls of yarn and garden vegetables, in every size from a fingernail to a thumb. A child can spend an afternoon on the sheets alone before touching a single activity.

Then there are 36 things to do with them. On the Milking time spread a farmer needs his cows rounded up, and the instruction is to add cows and milk cans until there are ten of each, which is counting practice dressed up as a job. Counting sheep gives a sheepdog three pens marked black, white and brown, and the child has to sort the flock into them by color. Elsewhere there are mazes, dot to dot puzzles, hidden object hunts, spot the difference pairs, and pages left open for coloring and doodling.

The pages are big, 10 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches, which is the right size for small hands peeling a sticker and placing it without tearing the page underneath. It travels well. This is the book that buys you a quiet hour in a waiting room, on a plane, or in the back seat somewhere past the second hour.
