Poppy and Patch are two goat kids with flowers behind their ears and no plans for the morning, and the farm is theirs to show a one year old around. Lift a flap and somebody is hiding: piglets rolling in the mud while Mama Pig asks who has been naughty in the garden, chicks under the hedge, lambs out in the long grass. Every spread ends in a small reveal that a toddler makes happen themselves.
That is the point of the format at this age. Grasping a chunky board flap and pulling it back is fine motor practice dressed up as a joke, and because the surprise is always an animal and its baby, the vocabulary lands in pairs: pig and piglet, sheep and lamb, hen and chick.
Twelve pages, five inches square and a full inch thick, written by Ginger Swift and illustrated by Chie Y Boyd in soft spring greens and rose. Published by Cottage Door Press in January 2017, in the same Babies Love Lift-a-Flap series as Santa's Workshop and Babies Love Christmas.
