You can never quite tell what might happen on Easter. There may be coloured eggs waiting inside your shoes. There may be a basket of ducklings on the kitchen table. There may be a bunny sitting in Grandma's rocking chair as though it has every right to be there. Tasha Tudor wrote and painted this in 1941 and never once explains any of it, which is precisely why children believe it.

Tudor was a Caldecott Honoree and one of the great watercolourists of American children's books, and her Easter world is all soft light, spring gardens and small animals doing improbable things with total seriousness. Eighty years on it still reads as gentle rather than dated.

Little Simon has brought it into the Classic Board Book format with a fresh new cover, so the family copy that used to get bent can now survive a toddler and go back in the Easter box every year.
