Twenty trains, and none of them arrive finished. Ten pages of stickers at the back hold the boilers, cabs, bogies and couplings; the child assembles each locomotive onto its own spread and it comes together like a kit.

The roster is the good part: steam locomotives, an electric train, a switch engine, a cog locomotive, a tram, a monorail, an armored train, a freight consist, and the two that sell the book on their own, the Flying Scotsman and the Orient Express. Every spread carries a statistics panel with top speed, length and weight, so a five year old who cannot yet read the paragraph can still compare the numbers.
