A soft plush turkey sits in the middle of the front cover, and the adult reading is expected to put a finger in it. From there the rhyme gives instructions: gobble, wobble, spin yourself around, reach down and touch the ground, spread your wings and hop and flap. It is a story that will not work unless somebody moves, which at this age is the entire idea.
The puppet passes through a die cut hole in the board block, so it appears on every spread as the character in the picture rather than as an accessory clipped to the cover. Christophe Jacques fills the pages around it with a squirrel, a rabbit and a chick copying the dance across a slope of falling leaves, and by the end the turkey is teaching the whole wood.
Twelve thick board pages, four and a third inches square, written by Brick Puffinton for Cottage Door Press's Little Learner Finger Puppet series and published in August 2021. Designed in the United States. A Thanksgiving book that gets a room of toddlers standing up.
