The reindeer is late. Santa is loading the sleigh somewhere past the snowmen and the North Pole signpost, and a small brown reindeer with red felt antlers and a red scarf has to get there before it leaves. Whoever is reading provides the running, because the reindeer is a plush finger puppet and the only way it moves across the page is if an adult puts a finger in and makes it.

That turns a Christmas Eve story into something a one year old participates in rather than watches. The puppet comes up through a die cut hole in the board block, so it is on every spread, and the twelve thick pages fill in around it with snowmen in striped scarves, rabbits, candy canes and a sky full of falling snow.
