The card is in the recycling by Tuesday. This is the version that survives. Lift the wavy die cut cover flap and there is a ruled panel headed For and From, so the person who gave it writes the date, the name and whatever they wanted to say on the day, and twenty years later the book is a dated record of a first birthday rather than a generic gift.

Inside, a small grey elephant in a party hat is doing everything a one year old does: one candle on the cake, balloons that will not stay put, a growth chart with a giraffe on it, a basket of first toys, and a mouse who keeps turning up in the corner of the picture. Jenny Wren paints it in soft mint, blush and confetti, and the text is short enough to read at bathtime and still be asked for again.
