A small rabbit announces he is running away, and then keeps going: he will be a fish in a stream, a rock on a mountain, a crocus in a hidden garden, a bird flying home. Every time, his mother finds the one way to follow him. Margaret Wise Brown wrote it in 1942 and it has not been out of print since.
This is the board book edition, and the format is the point. Thick pages take being grabbed, gummed and turned by hands that have not learned gentle yet, which is exactly the age this story lands hardest. Clement Hurd redrew several of his pictures for this edition, and the alternating color plates and soft pencil spreads still slow a bedtime down to the right speed.
What a two year old actually takes from it is one sentence long, and it is the reason grandparents keep buying this book eighty years on. Wherever you go, I will come and find you.
