Before a baby has a Christmas story they have Christmas words, and this is the book that hands them over one at a time. The cover alone labels five of them, each pinned to its own picture: gift, bell, cookie, santa, stocking. Inside, a flap lifts and hot cocoa turns out to go with gingerbread cookies, and the marshmallows have faces.

It is the naming that makes it work at this age. One short line per spread, a rhyme running underneath it, and six chunky flaps that put the payoff behind a physical action, so the vocabulary arrives attached to something the child did with their own hand. Stacy Peterson illustrates in soft mint, candy stripe and holly red, and the board is die cut into a scalloped outline.
