This is the squash that made zucchini a household word in the 1920s, and a century on nothing has replaced it. Black Beauty is a bush type, so it holds its ground instead of running across the bed, and it produces heavily: straight fruit so dark green it reads black, with thin glossy skin over creamy flesh. Cut them at six to eight inches for the grill or the grater, or let a few run larger and stuff them. Direct sow after your last frost and start picking in about fifty five days. Eighteen seeds minimum per packet.
