From Usborne, the British children's publisher that turned the board book into something to operate: press the buttons in its sound books to hear the scenes come alive, move a slider to change both the picture and the noise, lift a flap to see what is underneath.
Built for hands that are still learning to be gentle, which is exactly what makes them such dependable first-birthday and baby-shower gifts.

Over 170 stickers, and each one is a real bug with its name printed beside it. The sticker pages are laid out like a small field guide: cabbage white butterflies, red admirals, a common wasp, honeybees, a bumblebee, black ants, a dusky slug, a garden snail, seven-spot ladybugs, aphids and garden spiders on one sheet, then Hercules beetles, a tarantula, blue morpho butterflies, scarab and golden scarab beetles, jewel beetles, painted weevils and yellow crab spiders on the next.
The scenes are where they go. Bugs all around us is a garden of poppies, daisies and lavender waiting to be populated. In the jungle is the same idea somewhere much hotter. There are deserts and swamps too, so a child works out fairly quickly that a tarantula does not belong on the lavender.
That is the quiet trick of this one. Peeling and placing 170 small stickers is fine motor practice and a good hour of concentration, and the naming makes it early natural history without anybody announcing it. Simple facts run alongside the pictures, with links to recommended websites for the child who then wants more.
