From K'lani, started in Utah by Monica and Katie after Monica's braided bracelet snapped beside the plain black hair tie on the same wrist.
Nine and a half months of samples later, this is the answer: a hair tie that reads as jewelry and holds hair like a hair tie. The name honors the Hawaiian roots both families share — Kaiulani means the highest point of Heaven.

Freshwater pearls, on a hair tie. Glimmer runs them down three of its five bands: three fat baroque pearls set between gold tone cubes on a sage gray cord, a scatter of smaller ones through the taupe multi strand, and a full woven row along the pink braid at the bottom. The fourth band carries a white four petal charm in a gold tone frame, and the fifth is a pale pink and gold metallic braid with a short gold tone barrel and the little k'lani disc.
The palette is deliberately quiet. Soft pink, sand, sage gray and taupe with warm gold, which is to say it goes with whatever you already put on this morning and reads as jewelry from any normal distance. Then you take one off and tie your hair back with it, because underneath the pearls these are still five hair elastics.
Medium fits wrists 5 to 6.4 inches around, the size of a normal hair elastic. This is the set for a wedding week, for a work stack that has to look tidy on a call, and for the person who says she does not really wear jewelry.
