This is a picture book you unpack. Five envelopes are bound into the pages, and every one of them opens. Inside are an Advent calendar with numbered doors, the Christmas card Paddington makes himself for Aunt Lucy at the Home for Retired Bears in Lima, Peru, a bear shaped decoration for the tree, and more besides.
The story around them is a proper Paddington story. He goes down to the Portobello Road market to see the decorations going up, calls in on Mr Gruber for elevenses, admits he is saving for Christmas presents and has not got enough for anything special, and then, in the way Paddington always does, has an idea. R. W. Alley draws the Browns' house, the market and Mr Gruber's shop with the same crowded warmth the series has always had.
What it is really for is the countdown. A child opens one calendar window a morning and the book gets used every day of December instead of once at bedtime, which is why it works as an early December gift rather than a Christmas morning one. Michael Bond's bear does the rest.
Hardcover, 48 pages, about 10.6 by 8.3 in, based on the original stories by Michael Bond and illustrated by R. W. Alley. HarperCollins Children's Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, 2024. ISBN-13 9780008694005. Publisher age guidance: 3 years and up.
