Introduced in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1970 and still the butternut everyone else is measured against. Three to six pound fruit, rich and nutty orange flesh, and the sort of keeping quality that turns a September harvest into a February soup. The vines are vigorous and dependable and carry real resistance to squash vine borers, which is the pest that ends most squash patches early. Harvest when the skin has gone light tan, then cure the fruit before you store it and the flavor sweetens further. Direct sow after frost; about ninety five days to harvest.
Open pollinated, untreated and GMO free seed, hand packed by Sow True Seed in Asheville, North Carolina.
